そういえば

そういえば
expression, conjunction
speaking of which; come to think of it; that reminds me
expression
1. speaking of which; come to think of it; that reminds me
A conversational connector used to introduce a topic that the speaker has just been reminded of, usually by something the other person said. Marks a slight shift to a related point.
Come to think of it, I ran into him yesterday.
By the way, did you turn in the homework?
Come to think of it, I think I heard the location of next week's meeting has changed.

Literally 'if (one) says so' — そう (so/that way) + ()えば (if one says). Used when the current topic prompts the speaker to recall something related. The follow-up is usually loosely connected to what was just said.

Common patterns

  • Sentence-initial only, followed by a comma.
  • Often paired with けど or んだけど before stating the new point.

Common collocations

  • そういえば、(むかし)…: come to think of it, in the old days …
  • そういえば、()いた?: speaking of which, did you hear?
  • そういえば、そうだ: oh yeah, that's true (when reminded of something)

Similar words

  • ところ: by the way (deliberate topic change, not necessarily reminded by context)
  • それはそうと: by the way; that aside (more deliberate shift away from current topic)
  • ちなみ: incidentally; for your information (adds related info)
