CONTRAST WITH 所:
場所 names a physical spot and stays concrete — a location you could point to on a map or in a room.
所 is far more versatile: besides "place" it means "aspect" or "point" (彼のいい所, "his good points"), and it carries the grammar pattern 〜所だ that marks a stage of an action. 場所 can never be substituted into those uses.
Other use
In sumo, 場所 is the word for a tournament — the six annual tournaments are named by season and city, as in 夏場所 (the summer tournament). Learners meet this mainly in sports reporting.
