それは何(なん)?

What is that?

それを取(と)ってください。

Please pass me that.

それはいいですね。

That's good. / That sounds good.

それは私(わたし)のです。返(かえ)してください。

That's mine. Please give it back.

それを聞(き)いてうれしかったです。ずっと知(し)りたかったので、よかったです。

I was happy to hear that. I had been wanting to know, so I'm glad.

それ refers to things near the listener or to information just mentioned in conversation. It's part of the ko-so-a-do system. When someone tells you something, you can respond with それはいいですね (that's good) or それは大変(たいへん)ですね (that's tough). To modify nouns, use その instead.
