あれは何(なん)ですか。

あれを見(み)てください。

Please look at that (over there).

あれは富士山(ふじさん)ですか。

昨日(きのう)話(はな)していたあれ、どうなった？

What happened with that thing we were talking about yesterday?

Shared knowledge usage

あれが終(お)わったら電話(でんわ)してください。私(わたし)はここで待(ま)っていますから。

Please call me when that is done. I'll be waiting here.

あれ refers to things distant from both speaker and listener, completing the ko-so-a-do series with これ (this) and それ (that near you). It can also refer to shared knowledge between speaker and listener - something both parties know about. To modify nouns, use あの instead.
