ふくだい
noun
subtitle, secondary title
1. subtitle, secondary title
A secondary or supplementary title that appears alongside the main title of a book, article, film, or other work. Provides additional context or clarification for the main title. Not to be confused with movie subtitles (字幕(じまく)).

What is the subtitle of this book?
論文(ろんぶん)には副題(ふくだい)()けることが(おお)い。
Academic papers often have subtitles.
映画(えいが)副題(ふくだい)内容(ないよう)をよく(あらわ)している。
The film's subtitle captures its content well.

Refers to a secondary title of a work (such as the text after a colon in a book title), not to movie/TV subtitles displayed on screen. For on-screen subtitles, use 字幕(じまく).

COMMON PATTERNS:

  • 副題(ふくだい)()ける: to add a subtitle
  • 〜という副題(ふくだい): a subtitle that says ~
  • 副題(ふくだい)のない: without a subtitle

WORD FORMATION:
(ふく) (secondary, vice-) + (だい) (title). The prefix (ふく)〜 appears in many words: 副社長(ふくしゃちょう) (vice president), 副作用(ふくさよう) (side effect).

Similar term: サブタイトル (subtitle, loanword) is interchangeable in casual contexts.
