The executive ranked directly below the company president (社長(しゃちょう)), who assists the president and stands in when needed. Many companies have none.

副社長(ふくしゃちょう)に就任(しゅうにん)した。

She became vice president.

The vice president gave the address in place of the president.

As head of overseas operations, the vice president spends half the year abroad.

The usual order of top titles in a Japanese company is 会長(かいちょう) (chairman), 社長(しゃちょう), 副社長(ふくしゃちょう), 専務(せんむ), 常務(じょうむ).

In many American companies "vice president" is a mid-level executive title held by many people. A 副社長(ふくしゃちょう) is second only to the president, so it is not a safe translation for every VP title.
