A company that is controlled by another company (the parent company), typically through majority ownership of its shares. The parent company is called 親会社.
子会社を設立する。
To establish a subsidiary.
あの会社は大手メーカーの子会社だ。
That company is a subsidiary of a major manufacturer.
親会社が経営不振になり、子会社も売却されることになった。
The parent company fell into financial trouble, and the subsidiary was to be sold off as well.
USAGE:
A business term using the metaphor of parent and child: 親会社 (parent company) and 子会社 (child company / subsidiary). There is also 孫会社 (grandchild company), a subsidiary of a subsidiary.
