The elected head of a city (()). One of the most common local government titles in Japan. Mayors are directly elected by residents of the city.

USAGE:
Japanese local government heads have different titles depending on the type of municipality: 市長(しちょう) (city mayor), 町長(ちょうちょう) (town mayor), 村長(そんちょう) (village head), 区長(くちょう) (ward mayor). Together, these are collectively called 首長(しゅちょう) (head of a local government).
