The elected head of a village (村) in Japan's local government system. Villages are the smallest unit of municipal government, found mainly in rural areas.
(あたら)しい村長(そんちょう)(えら)ばれた。

The village chief listened to the villagers' voices.

USAGE:

In Japan's local government hierarchy, the heads of different municipal levels have different titles:

  • 市長(しちょう): city mayor
  • 町長(ちょうちょう): town mayor
  • 村長(そんちょう): village mayor

(むら) (village) is the smallest administrative unit. The number of villages in Japan has been declining due to municipal mergers.

NOTE: This is a homophone of 尊重(そんちょう) (respect).
