(なが)

ながめ
adjective-na
somewhat long; longish; on the long side
1. somewhat long; longish; on the long side
Indicates something is a bit longer than average or standard, whether in time, length, or duration. The め suffix softens the description, suggesting 'leaning toward long' rather than definitively long.
(かみ)(なが)めに()ってください。
Please cut my hair on the longer side.
今日(きょう)会議(かいぎ)(なが)めだった。
Today's meeting ran a bit long.
(なが)めに時間(じかん)()っておいたほうがいいですよ。
You should set aside a bit more time than you think you'll need.

Formed from (なが)い + め (the suffix indicating degree/tendency). This め pattern is productive in Japanese and can attach to many adjectives: (みじか)め (on the short side), (おお)め (on the large/many side), (すく)なめ (on the small/few side).

PATTERN:

  • (なが)めに + verb (do something for a somewhat longer time/length)
  • (なが)めの + noun (a somewhat long ~)

Do not confuse with (なが)め (view; scenery), which has the same reading but completely different meaning and kanji.
