1.
birthplace; hometown; place of origin
The place where a person was born or grew up. A very common topic in self-introductions in Japanese.
出身地はどこですか。
Where are you from?
私の出身地は北海道です。
My hometown is Hokkaido.
同じ出身地だと分かって、すぐに親しくなった。
When we found out we were from the same place, we became close right away.
USAGE:
出身地 is a standard way to refer to one's place of origin. It is commonly asked about in 自己紹介 (self-introductions). For informal speech, 出身はどこ? is more natural than the full compound.
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
- 出身地を聞く (to ask about someone's hometown)
- 出身地が同じ (to be from the same place)
RELATED WORDS:
出身 alone also means "from" or "coming from" and is used more broadly (大学出身 — university graduate).
