Capturing or dealing with all members of a group in a single sweep. Originally from a Chinese idiom meaning to catch all fish in one cast of the net. Often used for police raids or decisive actions that eliminate an entire group at once.
犯人を一網打尽にする。
To round up all the criminals at once.
警察は詐欺グループを一網打尽にした。
The police rounded up the entire fraud ring.
長年の捜査の末、密輸組織を一網打尽にすることに成功した。
After years of investigation, they succeeded in rounding up the entire smuggling organization.
Four-character compound (yojijukugo): 一 (one) + 網 (net) + 打 (strike) + 尽 (exhaust, all). Literally "to exhaust with one cast of the net." From a Chinese historical anecdote.
USAGE:
Almost always used with にする in the pattern ~を一網打尽にする. Most commonly used in crime and law enforcement contexts.
