The number one. This is the most basic counting number in Japanese. When counting objects, いち is often combined with counters like 一(いっ)個(こ) (ikko), 一(いち)枚(まい) (ichimai) or 一(いっ)回(かい) (ikkai); its pronunciation changes with the counter, and native counting uses 一(ひと)つ (hitotsu).
