Thin, translucent white paper used to cover the wooden lattice frames of shoji sliding doors. It allows soft, diffused light to pass through while providing privacy.
Cultural note
Shoji paper is traditionally replaced at least once a year, often during the year-end cleaning (大掃除). The old paper is peeled off, the frame is cleaned, and fresh paper is pasted on. Modern alternatives include plastic-reinforced shoji paper that is more durable.
