The traditional Japanese name for July (the seventh month). Part of the set of twelve traditional month names (和風月名) that predate the adoption of the Western calendar. Still used in formal writing, poetry, and seasonal greetings.
七月(しちがつ)は文月(ふづき)とも呼(よ)ばれる。
July is also called fumizuki.
手紙(てがみ)の書(か)き出(だ)しに「文月(ふづき)の候(こう)」と書(か)いた。
I wrote 'in the season of fumizuki' at the beginning of the letter.

The name 文月(ふづき) is thought to derive from the custom of writing poems and letters during the Tanabata festival (七夕(たなばた)) in the seventh month. 文(ふみ) means "letter" or "writing."
