Composed of 伝 (transmit, convey) + 道 (way, path, teaching). Originally a religious term, now also used figuratively for anyone who passionately promotes something. Common collocations: 伝道する (to evangelize), 伝道師 (evangelist; also used figuratively), 伝道活動 (missionary activity). Not to be confused with the homophones 電動 (electric-powered) or 殿堂 (hall of fame). Related: 宣教 (mission, propagation of religion) is a near-synonym but more specifically religious, while 伝道 extends more easily to figurative use.
