A formal particle that is the classical/literary equivalent of で. It was the standard form in classical Japanese and survives in modern formal contexts. It can indicate location (where something happens) and means/method (how something is done).
USAGE:
- Replaces で in formal written contexts: announcements, business correspondence, official notices
- Very common in event announcements: ~にて開催 (held at ~)
- Common in business communication: メールにて, 書面にて, 電話にて
- Sounds overly formal or archaic in casual conversation
- Sometimes seen at the end of letters or messages: 東京にて (written in Tokyo)
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
- ~にて開催: held at ~
- メールにて: by email
- 現地にて: on-site, at the location
- 本日にて終了: ending as of today

- において: in, at — also formal but specifically for "in the context of"; more common in academic writing
- をもって: with, by means of — very formal; used in official documents for deadlines and methods
