1.
ten thousand; 10,000
The number 10,000. 万 is a base counting unit in Japanese, so larger numbers like 一億 (100,000,000) are formed as multiples of まん rather than of millions.
一万円札を使った。
I used a 10,000-yen bill.
そのコンサートには一万人が集まった。
Ten thousand people gathered at that concert.
毎日一万歩歩くことを目標にしている。
I'm aiming to walk 10,000 steps every day.
Note that the 一 is required: just "万" alone is not used as a number on its own (unlike English "thousand," which can stand alone as a quantity).
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
- 一万円: 10,000 yen
- 一万円札: 10,000-yen bill
- 一万人: 10,000 people
- 一万歩: 10,000 steps
- 一万倍: ten thousand times
NUMBER REFERENCE:
- 千: 1,000
- 一万: 10,000
- 十万: 100,000
- 百万: 1,000,000
- 一億: 100,000,000
NOTE:
Larger numbers in Japanese are grouped by ten-thousands rather than thousands, so reading large figures often requires re-parsing. For example, 250,000 is 二十五万, not 二百五十千.
