(まん) (ten thousand) is a fundamental unit in the Japanese number system. Large numbers are grouped by (まん), not by thousands as in English.

COUNTING SYSTEM:

  • 一万(いちまん): 10,000
  • 十万(じゅうまん): 100,000
  • 百万(ひゃくまん): 1,000,000
  • 千万(せんまん): 10,000,000
  • 一億(いちおく): 100,000,000 (next unit)

COMMON EXPRESSIONS:

  • 万一(まんいち): by any chance, in case of emergency
  • 万全(ばんぜん): perfect, complete
  • 万歳(ばんざい): banzai, long live

CURRENCY NOTE:
一万円(いちまんえん)(さつ) is the 10,000-yen bill, the largest denomination in Japan.
