A bat-and-ball sport similar to baseball but played with a larger, softer ball on a smaller field. Popular in Japanese schools, especially for girls.

A loanword (from English "softball"). In Japan it is a common school sport, particularly for girls, and was an Olympic event in which the Japanese women's team won gold.
