A section or division of an organization.

営業部(えいぎょうぶ)に配属(はいぞく)された。

I was assigned to the sales department.

総務部(そうむぶ)に問(と)い合(あ)わせた。

開発部(かいはつぶ)で新製品(しんせいひん)を設計(せっけい)している。

We are designing new products in the development department.

2. club

An extracurricular activity club at school.

野球部(やきゅうぶ)に入(はい)る。

I join the baseball club.

美術部(びじゅつぶ)で絵(え)を描(か)いている。

I paint in the art club.

高校(こうこう)のとき吹奏楽部(すいそうがくぶ)に入(はい)っていた。

I was in the wind ensemble club in high school.

3. part, section

A portion of something larger.

胸部(きょうぶ)のレントゲンを撮(と)った。

I had a chest X-ray taken.

前半部(ぜんはんぶ)はおもしろかったが、後半部(こうはんぶ)は退屈(たいくつ)だった。

The first part was interesting, but the latter part was boring.

本(ほん)の第三部(だいさんぶ)から読(よ)み始(はじ)めた。

I started reading from part three of the book.

〜部(ぶ) is a suffix meaning 'department,' 'club,' or 'part.'

Watch out

After a number, 部(ぶ) is a counter for copies of a document and for parts of a work: 資料(しりょう)を三部(さんぶ)コピーする (make three copies of the handout), 二部(にぶ)構成(こうせい) (in two parts). 一部(いちぶ) also means "a part, some" (一部(いちぶ)の人(ひと), some people).
