Porcelain produced in and around the town of 有田 in Saga Prefecture. Japan's first true porcelain, with a 400-year tradition, known for fine white clay and intricate cobalt-blue or polychrome decoration.

Named after the town of 有田 in Saga Prefecture, Kyushu. Produced since the early 1600s, when porcelain clay was discovered in the area.
CULTURAL CONTEXT:
Until the late 19th century, Arita ware exported through the nearby port of 伊万里 was called 伊万里焼 in foreign markets. The two names overlap but in modern Japanese 有田焼 usually refers to the porcelain made in the Arita region, while 伊万里焼 now more often refers to older pieces or pieces in classical styles.
