Named after the town of 有田(ありた) in Saga Prefecture, Kyushu. Produced since the early 1600s, when porcelain clay was discovered in the area.

CULTURAL CONTEXT:
Until the late 19th century, Arita ware exported through the nearby port of 伊万里(いまり) was called 伊万里(いまり)(やき) in foreign markets. The two names overlap but in modern Japanese 有田焼(ありたやき) usually refers to the porcelain made in the Arita region, while 伊万里(いまり)(やき) now more often refers to older pieces or pieces in classical styles.
