TRANSITIVITY: Transitive ichidan verb. Xを呼(よ)び止(と)める. A compound of 呼(よ)ぶ (to call) and 止(と)める (to stop): the calling out is what makes the person stop. Frequently used in the passive, 呼(よ)び止(と)められる, when one is stopped by police or a stranger.
