1. to stop, to halt, to turn off

Used when stopping or halting something. This is a transitive verb—you stop something.

Please stop the car.

Stop the music.

The baby cried, so I turned off the TV.

It's dangerous, so stop the car immediately.

I was listening to music late at night, and my neighbor told me it was noisy, so I stopped it.

2. to park

Used when parking a vehicle.

May I park my car here?

Let's park the car in the parking lot.

Where should I park my bicycle?

Please don't park your car on this road.

I parked the car in front of the store and went shopping.

The rain got heavy, so I parked the car in a wide open area and waited.

TRANSITIVITY: 他動詞(たどうし) (transitive). Pair: 止(と)まる (intransitive). Pattern: Xを止(と)める (stop X).

ASPECT: ている indicates resulting state. 止(と)めている = 'have stopped' or 'is parked.'
