For movement to cease. An intransitive verb - the subject stops by itself.
電車(でんしゃ)()まった。
The train stopped.
(くるま)(きゅう)()まりました。
The car stopped suddenly.
時計(とけい)()まっています。
The clock has stopped.
ている = resulting state
The rain stopped and the sky became bright.
止む (やむ) is also used for rain
信号(しんごう)(あか)なったので()まらなければなりません。
Because the light turned red, I have to stop.
2. to stay, to lodge
To stay overnight at a place. Written as ()まる in this sense.
ホテル()まる。
To stay at a hotel.
Different kanji: 泊まる
友達(ともだち)(いえ)()まりました。
I stayed at my friend's house.
今夜(こんや)どこ()まります
Where will you stay tonight?
On my trip, I stayed at a hot spring inn for three days.
When I'm on business trips, I always make it a point to stay at a hotel near the station.

TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive). Pair: ()める (transitive). Pattern: Xが()まる (X stops).

ASPECT: ている indicates resulting state. ()まっている = 'is stopped/is stationary.'
