1. to stop, to come to a halt

For movement to cease. An intransitive verb - the subject stops by itself.

The train stopped.

The car stopped suddenly.

時計(とけい)が止(と)まっています。

The clock has stopped.

ている = resulting state

The rain stopped and the sky became bright.

止む (やむ) is also used for rain

信号(しんごう)が赤(あか)になったので、止(と)まらなければなりません。

Because the light turned red, I have to stop.

2. to stay, to lodge

To stay overnight at a place. Written as 泊(と)まる in this sense.

ホテルに泊(と)まる。

To stay at a hotel.

Different kanji: 泊まる

I stayed at my friend's house.

Where will you stay tonight?

On my trip, I stayed at a hot spring inn for three days.

When I'm on business trips, I always make it a point to stay at a hotel near the station.

TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞(じどうし) (intransitive). Pair: 止(と)める (transitive). Pattern: Xが止(と)まる (X stops).

ASPECT: ている indicates resulting state. 止(と)まっている = 'is stopped/is stationary.'

COMMON PATTERNS:

PAIR: 止(と)める (transitive) - 車(くるま)を止(と)めた (stopped the car).

Note: 泊(と)まる (stay overnight) uses different kanji.
