The holding facility inside a police station where a suspect is kept after arrest while the investigation proceeds. Distinct from a detention house for defendants awaiting trial and from a prison for convicted offenders.
容疑者(ようぎしゃ)は留置場(りゅうちじょう)に入(い)れられた。
The suspect was put in the police lockup.
弁護士(べんごし)が留置場(りゅうちじょう)に面会(めんかい)に来(き)た。
A lawyer came to the lockup to meet with him.
逮捕(たいほ)された後(あと)、起訴(きそ)されるまで留置場(りゅうちじょう)に留(と)め置(お)かれることがある。
After an arrest, a person may be held in the police lockup until charges are filed.

留置(りゅうち) (detaining, holding) + 場(じょう) (place). Often called 留置所(りゅうちしょ) in speech, and known informally as ブタ箱(ぶたばこ) in slang.
