The holding facility inside a police station where a suspect is kept after arrest while the investigation proceeds. Distinct from a detention house for defendants awaiting trial and from a prison for convicted offenders.

留置(りゅうち) (detaining, holding) + (じょう) (place). Often called 留置所(りゅうちしょ) in speech, and known informally as ブタ箱(ぶたばこ) in slang.
