1. to ripen; to become ripe (of fruit or grain)

For fruit, grain, or seeds to reach full maturity, becoming sweet, soft, and ready to eat. Intransitive: the fruit is the subject, and there is no object.

柿(かき)がよく熟(う)れている。

The persimmons are nicely ripe.

この桃(もも)はまだ熟(う)れていない。

This peach is not ripe yet.

熟(う)れた果物(くだもの)は甘(あま)いが傷(いた)みやすいので、早(はや)めに食(た)べたほうがいい。

Ripe fruit is sweet but spoils easily, so it is better to eat it soon.

Transitivity

Intransitive. The fruit ripens by itself: 桃(もも)が熟(う)れる. To say that someone ripens fruit, use 熟(じゅく)させる or 追熟(ついじゅく)させる.

ASPECT (ている):
熟(う)れている normally describes the resulting state ('is ripe'), not an action in progress, so it is the form learners meet most often. 熟(う)れる on its own points to the future or to a general truth.
