Nagasaki; the historic port city and its prefecture
A hillside port city in western Kyushu. For over two centuries it was Japan's only window on the outside world through the Dutch trading post at 出島, and in 1945 it became the second city struck by an atomic bomb.
Its long contact with Portuguese, Dutch, and Chinese traders left a distinctive local culture — Christian churches, カステラ sponge cake, and the mixed noodle dish ちゃんぽん.

Cultural note
Every August 9th the city holds a memorial ceremony for the atomic bombing, and 長崎 appears in peace education alongside 広島. Its harbor seen from the surrounding hills is counted among Japan's three great night views.
