Cultural note

Most 秋祭(あきまつ)り are held by a neighborhood shrine in September or October, with portable shrines (神輿(みこし)), festival floats (山車(だし)) and food stalls. They give thanks for the harvest, while summer festivals (夏祭(なつまつ)り) grew from prayers against disease and from the Bon season.
