1.
prophecy; revelation (from God)
A message from God entrusted to a prophet, especially in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Distinct from 予言, an ordinary prediction of the future.
The 預 means 'entrusted': the prophet is entrusted with God's words.
Watch out
- 予言: prediction, foretelling the future — the everyday word (地震を予言する, ノストラダムスの予言)
- 預言: only for religious revelation; a 預言者 is a prophet such as Moses or Muhammad
In general writing the two are often confused, and 予言 is sometimes used for both.
