To lose one's balance and fall to the ground. Used when a person trips, slips, or otherwise falls while walking or standing.
I fell down on the street.
てしまう adds regret or emphasis
The child fell down and is crying.

ASPECT: ている indicates resulting state or ongoing. (ころ)んでいる = 'has fallen (and is on the ground)' or 'is falling.'
