to fall down, to tumble
To lose one's balance and fall to the ground. Used when a person trips, slips, or otherwise falls while walking or standing.
TRANSITIVITY: 自動詞 (intransitive). Pair: 転がす (transitive, to roll something). Pattern: Xが転ぶ.
ASPECT: ている indicates resulting state or ongoing. 転んでいる = 'has fallen (and is on the ground)' or 'is falling.'
COMMON PATTERNS:
- 道で転ぶ (fall on the road)
- 転んでしまう (unfortunately fall)
- 転ばないように (so as not to fall)
- 転んで怪我する (fall and get injured)
Different from 落ちる (fall from height). 転ぶ is for losing balance on the ground.
