足(そく) is the counter for pairs of footwear including shoes, socks, boots, and slippers.

COUNTING PATTERN:

  • 一(いっ)足(そく): one pair (small っ before そ)
  • 二(に)足(そく): two pairs
  • 三(さん)足(ぞく): three pairs (voiced: ぞく)
  • 何(なん)足(ぞく): how many pairs? (voiced: ぞく)

WHAT IT COUNTS:

NOTE: This counter emphasizes that footwear comes in pairs. For single items, use 片方(かたほう) (one of a pair).
