オートバイ

オートバイ is from "auto" + "bicycle" (wasei-eigo). In everyday speech, バイク is more commonly used.

ALTERNATE TERMS:

• バイク: bike (most common in casual speech)
• 単車(たんしゃ): motorcycle (older/regional term)
• スクーター: scooter (smaller, step-through type)
• 原付(げんつき): moped (50cc or less, short for 原動機付(げんどうきつき)自転車(じてんしゃ))

COMMON EXPRESSIONS:

• オートバイに乗(の)る: to ride a motorcycle
• オートバイの免許(めんきょ): motorcycle license
• 二人乗(ふたりの)り: riding with a passenger

LICENSING:
In Japan, different licenses are required based on engine size: 原付(げんつき) (50cc), 小型(こがた) (125cc), 中型(ちゅうがた) (400cc), 大型(おおがた) (unlimited).
