In old markets, goods were weighed using scales.
秤 is the general term for a weighing device — any type of scale or balance. Also sometimes written as はかり in hiragana or 計.
TYPES OF SCALES:
- キッチン秤: kitchen scale
- デジタル秤: digital scale
- 台秤: platform scale
- 天秤: balance scale (also figurative: weighing options)
- 体重計: bathroom/body weight scale (uses 計 not 秤)

The kanji 秤 is not a common-use kanji (常用漢字), so it is often written in hiragana. In stores, 量り売り means "sold by weight."
