FORMALITY LEVELS:

The number of crests indicates the level of formality:

  • (いつ)(もん) (5 crests): Most formal, for weddings, funerals
  • (みっ)(もん) (3 crests): Semi-formal
  • (ひと)(もん) (1 crest): Less formal

FULL FORMAL OUTFIT:
For men: 紋付(もんつき)羽織(はおり)(はかま) (crested haori jacket with hakama pants)
For women: 黒留(くろとめ)(そで) with family crests

  • 葬式(そうしき): Funerals
