紋付 refers to any garment bearing a family crest (家紋). Most commonly refers to a formal black kimono worn by men at ceremonies.
FORMALITY LEVELS:
The number of crests indicates the level of formality:
- 五つ紋 (5 crests): Most formal, for weddings, funerals
- 三つ紋 (3 crests): Semi-formal
- 一つ紋 (1 crest): Less formal
FULL FORMAL OUTFIT:
For men: 紋付羽織袴 (crested haori jacket with hakama pants)
For women: 黒留袖 with family crests
