To put on clothing worn on the upper body or full body (shirts, jackets, dresses). Different verbs are used for lower body, head, and accessories.

What will you wear today?

Please put on your coat.

She is wearing a red dress.

着ている = wearing (state)

It's cold, so you should put on one more layer.

When I was wearing my older brother's shirt, he said 'Give it back.'

TRANSITIVITY: 他動詞(たどうし) (transitive). No pair verb. Pattern: Xを着(き)る (wear/put on X).

ASPECT: ている indicates resulting state. 着(き)ている = 'is wearing' (not 'is putting on').
