ETYMOLOGY:
From French "atelier" (workshop). Entered Japanese in the Meiji period and is now well established.

USAGE:
アトリエ specifically implies an artist's creative workspace. For a music studio, スタジオ is more common. For a general workshop or factory, 工房(こうぼう) is used.
