1.
land reclamation, landfill, filling in
The process of creating new land by filling in bodies of water (bays, marshes, rivers) with soil, rubble, or waste. Also refers to waste disposal sites where garbage is buried underground.
Usage
Much of Tokyo's waterfront, including Odaiba and parts of the port area, was created through 埋め立て. The word can refer to both the process and the resulting land. 埋め立て地 (reclaimed land) and 埋め立て処分場 (landfill disposal site) are common compound forms.
