USAGE:
バック has several distinct uses in Japanese. As a background/support word, it often appears in the pattern ~をバックに (with ~ as a backdrop) or バックがつく (to have backing). As a driving term, バックする is the standard way to say "to reverse" a vehicle.

NOTE ON MEANING:
バック does not mean "bag" in Japanese — that word is バッグ (baggu). The two are commonly confused by learners.

COMMON COLLOCATIONS:

  • ~をバックに: with ~ in the background
  • バックがつく: to gain backing/support
  • バックする: to reverse (a vehicle)
  • バックミラー: rearview mirror
  • バック駐車(ちゅうしゃ): reverse parking
