To cause someone distress, worry, or difficulty. The subject is the person or thing causing the trouble, and the object is the person being troubled.

USAGE:
The transitive counterpart of (なや)む (to worry, to be troubled). While (なや)む describes the person experiencing worry, (なや)ます describes what causes the worry. Very often used in the passive form (なや)まされる (to be troubled by).

GRAMMAR:
Godan verb ending in す. Transitive — takes を for the person being troubled: Xを(なや)ます. The passive (なや)まされる with に marks the cause: Xに(なや)まされる.

COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
