USAGE:
Japan adopted the Gregorian calendar (新暦) in 1873 (Meiji 6). The old lunisolar calendar is still called 旧暦 and remains relevant for traditional festivals, especially in Okinawa and rural areas. Some seasonal events (お{盆}, 七夕) are celebrated on either the old or new calendar depending on the region.
