horizon, sea horizon
The apparent line where the sea meets the sky when viewed from the coast or at sea. Specifically refers to the horizon over water, as distinct from 地平線 (horizon over land).
水平線に夕日が沈んだ。
The setting sun sank below the horizon.
船が水平線の向こうに消えていった。
The ship disappeared beyond the horizon.
高台から見ると、水平線がまっすぐに伸びているのが見える。
Looking from the hilltop, you can see the horizon stretching out in a straight line.
USAGE:
Japanese distinguishes between two types of horizon: 水平線 is the horizon over the sea or ocean, while 地平線 is the horizon over land (plains, desert, etc.). 水平線 literally means "water-level line."
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
- 水平線に沈む: to sink below the horizon
- 水平線の向こう: beyond the horizon
- 水平線が見える: the horizon is visible
