overwriting, saving over existing data
Replacing existing data or content by writing new data in its place. Most commonly used in computing contexts.
上書き has two meanings: overwriting data (computing) and the address on an envelope (traditional). The computing sense is far more common today.
Computing usage
- 上書き保存: Save (overwrite existing file) — equivalent to Ctrl+S
- 名前をつけて保存: Save As — saves as a new file
- 上書き禁止: write-protected, overwrite not allowed
Common patterns
Traditional usage
In letter-writing, 上書き refers to the name and address written on the outside of an envelope (封筒). This usage is now less common but still appears in formal contexts.
Etymology
From 上 (on top) + 書き (writing) — writing on top of something.
