Rarely used alone; almost always appears in the four-character compound 不要(ふよう)不急(ふきゅう) (nonessential and non-urgent). This phrase became widely known during the COVID-19 pandemic when the Japanese government repeatedly called on citizens to avoid 不要(ふよう)不急(ふきゅう)の外出(がいしゅつ).
