USAGE:
Part of Japan's cultural property protection system established in 1950. There are two levels: 重要文化財(じゅうようぶんかざい) (Important Cultural Properties, designated by the national government) and 登録有形文化財(とうろくゆうけいぶんかざい) (Registered Tangible Cultural Properties, a lighter registration system). Prefectures and municipalities also designate their own.
