雨をやり過ごす。
To wait out the rain.
嵐が過ぎるまでやり過ごした。

to overdo; to go too far
To do something to excess, beyond what is appropriate.
飲みをやり過ごした。
I overdid it with the drinking.
冗談をやり過ごした。
I went too far with the joke.
練習をやり過ごして体を壊してしまった。
I overdid the practice and hurt my body.
やり過ごす has two distinct meanings: 'to let pass/wait out' and 'to overdo.' Sense 1 (let pass) is more common.

SENSE 1 — LET PASS:
The nuance is deliberately staying still or inactive while something unpleasant passes by.
- 雨をやり過ごす: to wait out the rain

SENSE 2 — OVERDO:
Similar to やり過ぎる (to overdo), but やり過ごす often implies looking back on the excess.
