Part of the traditional cherry blossom blooming scale (開花 stages) used by the Japan Meteorological Agency and in daily conversation during spring. The scale progresses through stages from buds (蕾) to full bloom (満開) to falling petals (散り始め).
BLOOMING SCALE:
- 蕾: buds
- 咲き始め: beginning to bloom
- 三分咲き: 30% bloom
- 五分咲き: 50% bloom (half bloom)
- 七分咲き: 70% bloom
- 満開: full bloom
- 散り始め: beginning to fall
USAGE NOTE:
Many people consider 七分咲き to be the most beautiful stage for 花見, as the blossoms are nearly full but the trees still have fresh buds opening.
