To come very close to dying, either literally from illness or accident, or hyperbolically to express extreme discomfort or distress.

A compound verb formed from 死ぬ (to die) + かける (to be about to; to be on the verge of). The auxiliary verb 〜かける attaches to the masu-stem of verbs to express that an action has started but not completed, or is about to happen. Common in both serious and exaggerated/humorous contexts.
