The degree of detail visible in an image, whether on a screen, in a photograph, or through an optical instrument. Almost always appears in the compound 解像度 (resolution as a measurable quantity).
Composed of 解 (resolve, analyze) and 像 (image). In practice, 解像 almost never appears alone — it is nearly always used in the compound 解像度 (resolution, literally "degree of image resolution"). This is an essential technology term for discussing cameras, displays, printers, and digital media.
Note: the homophone 改造 (remodeling, modification) is a completely different word.
