1.
resolution; image resolution
The degree of detail visible in an image, whether on a screen, in a photograph, or through an optical instrument. Almost always appears in the compound 解像度 (resolution as a measurable quantity).
解像度が高い画像を選んだ。
I chose a high-resolution image.
このカメラの解像度はどのくらいですか。
What is the resolution of this camera?
画面の解像度を上げると、文字や写真がより鮮明に表示されるが、その分バッテリーの消耗が早くなる。
Increasing the screen resolution displays text and photos more clearly, but the battery drains faster as a result.
Composed of 解 (resolve, analyze) and 像 (image). In practice, 解像 almost never appears alone — it is nearly always used in the compound 解像度 (resolution, literally "degree of image resolution"). This is an essential technology term for discussing cameras, displays, printers, and digital media.
Note: the homophone 改造 (remodeling, modification) is a completely different word.
COMMON COLLOCATIONS:
- 高解像度: high resolution
- 低解像度: low resolution
