A broadcasting or telecommunications facility that receives a signal and retransmits it to extend coverage to areas that cannot receive the original signal directly.
Composed of 中継 (relay, retransmission) and 局 (station, office). Japan's mountainous terrain means that 中継局 are essential for broadcasting TV and radio signals to valleys and remote areas. During the transition from analog to digital broadcasting (completed in 2012), thousands of relay stations across Japan were upgraded.
